Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2018 Magnum

Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas is a classic, characterful Rhône red that combines power with refinement. Crafted by siblings Christophe and Anne-Sophie Ay, the seventh generation at the estate, it draws its intensity from old-vine Grenache, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre from the domaine’s own vineyards.

Proefnotities
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark colour that already hints at its concentration. The nose is generous and distinctly Rhône-like, with aromas of black cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, black pepper, liquorice and a delicate smoky note. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense, yet the dark fruit comes across with a velvety texture and impressive balance. South-of-France spice adds depth and warmth, while the structure suggests excellent aging potential. It is already very enjoyable now, but it has at least another decade to develop further complexity.

Productie
The grapes come from Domaine Raspail-Ay’s own vineyards in Gigondas, where the Rhône terroir provides the warmth and structure needed for this style of wine. The harvest is done by hand, and all bunches are fully de-stemmed before pressing. After fermentation for around 30 days, the wine is matured for up to two years in old foudres, large oak vats that can hold up to 13,000 litres. It is bottled without fining or filtration.

Eten & Serveren
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, game, grilled beef, rich stews and dishes with herbs de Provence. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended to allow the wine to fully open up, especially in its youth.
